New review of 'Let your free flag fly' from Powerpopaholic

Hi there

Here is the latest review of the new album from Powerpoaholic.....

'After a good debut LP, Aaron Hemington has fulfilled his promise of making The Sunchymes album that marries the Wondermints/Curt Boettcher like arrangements to hook filled melodies. The intricate techniques of 60′s sunshine pop are on full display with “Revelations In Her Mind” and the solid hook in “Aquarius Summer” make it sweet ear candy. Most of the album fits stylistically within the genre of British psyche pop and 60′s California sound.

The west coast sounds on “Enchanted Girl” are kissed with harmonies along the lines of Cowsills or the Zombies. Then “Astronomical Clock” mixes Brian Wilson Pet Sounds with a swirling psychedelic mellotron. This playful ambience is also a big part of “Uncle Alfred’s Slide Show.” Fans of Magical Mystery Tour era Beatles will love “Your Disguise” and Beach Boys fans will enjoy “On A Summer Ride.” Most every track here impresses, and my next suggestion would be to expand his harmonious range, but this is pretty incredible and one of the year’s best retro flavored albums. 9/10' (www.powerpopaholic.com)

I have had a bit of a break from writing following the completion of 'Let your free flag fly'. However, I am now getting back into writing and hope to record some new songs soon.

Cheers

Popgeekheaven Review of 'Let your free flag fly'

Really pleased with the latest review of 'Let your free flag fly' which comes from Mike Baron at Popgeekheaven. Here it is:

'Aaron Hemington’s unique synthesis ofMagical Mystery Tour era Beatles and Pet Sounds era Beach Boys forges new territory on this remarkably consistent hazy sunned psychedelic excursion. Harmonizing with himself mostly on the 4th, Hemington creates a dreamy ambience that sucks you in, beginning with the steampunk “Revelations.” He sometimes seems like Mycroft to Brian Wilson’s Sherlock. ”Enchanted Girl” is very chamber rock with its synthesized harpsichord. ”Astronomical Clock” contains a dash of Four Seasons while “Uncle Albert’s Slide Show” inevitably recalls McCartney’s Uncle Albert, and XTC as well. ”On a Summer Ride” is pure west coast dreaminess.
Four and a half stars.'

Review of new album from Shindig Happening Magazine Blog

The first review of the new album 'Let your free flag fly' is in and here it is:

'A couple of years back, on constant rotation at my place was an album in thrall to The Beach Boys – rich in harmonies and stunning melodies. Bizarrely, it hailed not from California but from Rushden, Northamptonshire. Now Aaron, (for he is the The Sunchymes) is  back with a second outing that’s just as strong as its predecessor.

A few moments into the opener, ‘Revelations In Her Mind’, and you’ll know what’s coming – West Coast sunshine-pop as the Wilsons played it but with additional twists and turns. This time round Aaron has plainly been listening to a few British psych albums. For ‘Seargent Walker’ and ‘Uncle Alfred’s Slide Show’ have that sinister tweeness that characterises the best of the genre. They sound a little to me like lost ’80s mod band The Direct Hits, and that is a big compliment. '

Hi there! I hope you are all well. Just a quick message to let you all know that my new album 'Let your free flag fly' is out now and is available from CD Baby, itunes and Amazon.  I guess the album is best described as Beach Boys influenced West Coast pop meets quirky English psychedelia. I have posted a few tracks on Reverbnation (www.reverbnation.com/thesunchymes) if you would like to listen. There are also previews of all the tracks at www.cdbaby.com/cd/thesunchymes I would also like to say thanks to all of you that have supported The Sunchymes so far.

Nice review at Popjunkietv

Just found this review of 'Shifting Sands' at Popjunkietv..

'There have been so many good new(ish) psych bands who have released fantastic albums in 2010 that I do wonder that there are probably loads of great bands who have slipped past my radar. Take The Sunchymes, a band brought to my attention via Twitter, who IMO are up there with Superimposers, Colorama, Moles and the others.
Shifting Sands is actaully the work of a fella called Aaron who hails from Northampton but spirtually resides a block away from Brian Wilson. The Sunchymes have mid to late 60s Beach Boys completely nailed (Aaron even sounds a little like a Wilson brother) and yet have wonderful songs that absorb other influences too - I can hear a bit of UK psych, a smidgeon of Jellyfish and even a little Teenage Fanclub.
The tunes on the band's debut album Shifting Sands are uniformly excellent. I especially the cars 'n girls ambience of Feeling Just Fine, the complex Surfs Up epic that is Hung Up on a Dream and Greenacre Lane and Free Rider the two most up beat songs on the album. I also love Aaron's enderaing habit of naming his songs after 60s classics (Hung up on a Dream, Shifting Sands and even Forever Chang(es)ing. He is apparently already hard at work on the follow up.'
